A panel constituted to review the State School Sports Meet in Tamil Nadu has recommended the inclusion of rugby as a competitive discipline, according to sources familiar with the development. The recommendation was made in a report submitted to the state's education and sports departments, though no timeline for a decision has been announced.

The panel's proposal comes amid growing efforts to popularise rugby in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where the sport has gained traction through school and club-level tournaments. Rugby is currently not part of the mainstream school sports calendar in most Indian states, limiting opportunities for young players to compete at the state level. The panel is believed to have cited the sport's potential to promote fitness, teamwork, and discipline among students.

If approved, the inclusion would allow school teams to compete in rugby at the State School Sports Meet, potentially creating a pipeline for national selection. However, the recommendation must first be accepted by the state government, and logistical challenges such as infrastructure, coaching, and safety protocols would need to be addressed. Rugby India, the national governing body, has welcomed the move, calling it a 'progressive step' for the sport's grassroots development.
