Cook-cum-helpers under the banner of the Union of Cook-cum-Helpers, PM POSHAN, Meghalaya, held a mass rally at Madan Malki on Friday, demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi increase their monthly honorarium from ₹900 to ₹9,000.
Addressing the gathering, Union President Jina Nengnong said the union was urging the Prime Minister to respond to their demand, adding that they were still awaiting a response from the Union Government.
Nengnong appealed to the members to consider requesting teachers to prepare meals only once a week from next week and assist in distributing rice to students.
She further stated that the union would hold a general meeting in February to take a final decision while awaiting a written response from the Prime Minister. If a response was received, they would continue their work; however, if no response came, the union would announce its decision to discontinue its services.
The thousands of cook-cum-helpers present at the rally collectively expressed their support for the proposal.
Nengnong reiterated that if the Union Government failed to respond, the union would convene a meeting in February to decide on its future course of action. She also highlighted that the members had been performing their duties as a voluntary service.
Other leaders, including an adviser to the union, also addressed the gathering.
