Mysuru city police have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC around the Mahishasura statue atop Chamundi Hills, banning all gatherings, processions, and public meetings in the area. The order, effective from [date], comes just days before the annual Mahisha Dasara event, which is observed by Dalit and progressive groups to honor Mahishasura as a symbol of resistance and pride. The police cited potential law and order disturbances and intelligence inputs about possible clashes between opposing groups.

The Mahisha Dasara celebration, which began in 2015 as a counter to the traditional Mysuru Dasara that celebrates the goddess Chamundeshwari's victory over Mahishasura, has been a flashpoint in Karnataka's cultural politics. While organizers argue it is a celebration of Dalit identity and history, right-wing groups have opposed it, calling it anti-Hindu. In previous years, the event has seen tight security and occasional protests. This year, the police have also banned the entry of vehicles and pedestrians near the statue, except for essential services.

The ban has drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and Dalit organizations, who see it as an infringement on their right to assemble and express their cultural identity. Supporters of the ban argue it is necessary to maintain communal harmony. The district administration has stated that the restrictions will remain in place until [date] and that any violation will be met with legal action. The development is likely to resonate in Karnataka's political landscape, where Dalit votes are crucial, and could spark further debates on the balance between law and order and civil liberties.
