In a midnight operation, the Mumbai Police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) seized 9,800 psychotropic tablets, including nitrazepam and alprazolam, valued at ₹2.53 crore in the Govandi area of Mumbai. The raid targeted the illegal street sale of these drugs, commonly referred to as 'buttons'.

The seized tablets are part of a growing trend of prescription drug abuse in Mumbai, where such substances are sold openly in slum clusters and party circuits. Nitrazepam and alprazolam are habit-forming sedatives and anti-anxiety medications that are strictly regulated in India. The ANC has been conducting similar raids across the city, but the sheer quantity and value of this seizure highlight the scale of the illicit trade. Officials have not yet disclosed whether any arrests were made, but an investigation is underway to trace the supply chain.

The bust underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the diversion of pharmaceutical drugs into the black market. It also raises questions about regulatory oversight and the need for stricter monitoring of pharmacies and distributors. As the investigation proceeds, authorities are expected to intensify efforts to dismantle the networks behind this lucrative trade, which poses significant public health risks.
