The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a resolution seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging the Central Government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address alleged defects in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The resolution, moved by the state government, demands the restoration of voting rights to all eligible voters and steps to restore the credibility of the ECI.

The resolution comes amid growing opposition concerns over the SIR process, which they claim has disenfranchised lakhs of voters, particularly in Kerala. The state assembly resolution argues that the SIR has been riddled with errors and has disproportionately affected marginalised communities. It calls for a thorough review and correction of the electoral rolls before the next general elections. The ECI has previously defended the SIR as a necessary exercise to clean up electoral rolls, but critics argue it lacks transparency and has led to wrongful deletions.

The passage of this resolution is significant as it reflects the escalating tension between the opposition-ruled states and the central government over electoral reforms. While the resolution is non-binding, it adds to the political pressure on the ECI and the Centre. The BJP-led central government has not yet responded to the resolution. The ECI is likely to face increased scrutiny over its handling of the SIR, and the issue may become a rallying point for opposition parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The next steps could include legal challenges or further political mobilisation by opposition parties.
