In Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, a bus conductor identified as Sivanathan was arrested by local police for allegedly transporting several kilograms of gutka, a banned tobacco product. The arrest occurred during a routine check, and police sources confirmed that Sivanathan had been carrying the contraband in bags while operating on routes between Polur town and Bengaluru. The seizure and arrest mark a significant crackdown on the illegal tobacco trade in the region.

According to police, Sivanathan procured the gutka from dealers in Bengaluru and smuggled it into Tamil Nadu, where the sale and distribution of gutka have been prohibited since 2013 under the Food Safety and Standards Act. The ban was implemented due to health concerns associated with the product, which contains areca nut and tobacco, known carcinogens. Despite the prohibition, illegal trade persists, often facilitated by individuals using public transport to evade detection. Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact quantity seized or whether Sivanathan has prior convictions.

The arrest underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the smuggling of banned substances across state borders. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of current interdiction strategies and the potential involvement of larger networks. The police are investigating whether Sivanathan acted alone or as part of a broader operation. This case may lead to increased scrutiny of transport routes and stricter penalties for offenders. Further updates are expected as the investigation proceeds.
