Saundatti Jatra: Extra Buses Deployed to Handle Pilgrim Surge
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced additional buses to accommodate the large number of devotees attending the annual Saundatti Jatra in Belagavi district. The festival, held at the Renuka Yellamma Temple, attracts lakhs of pilgrims from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa. Authorities aim to ensure smooth transportation and avoid overcrowding during the peak days.
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced the deployment of extra buses to the annual Saundatti Jatra, a major religious festival held at the Renuka Yellamma Temple in Saundatti, Belagavi district. The move aims to facilitate the travel of lakhs of devotees expected to attend the event, which typically sees a massive influx of pilgrims from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa.
The Saundatti Jatra, also known as the Yellamma Devi Fair, is one of Karnataka's largest religious gatherings, usually held in the months of December or January. Last year, over 10 lakh devotees participated, prompting authorities to enhance transport and crowd management measures. KSRTC officials stated that additional buses will operate from major cities like Bengaluru, Hubballi, and Belagavi to Saundatti, with special services during peak days. "We have coordinated with local authorities to ensure seamless travel and safety for all pilgrims," said a KSRTC spokesperson.
The increased bus services are expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a reliable transport option for devotees. However, challenges remain in managing the massive crowds and ensuring adequate facilities at the temple town. Local administration has set up temporary shelters, medical camps, and security arrangements. The success of these measures will be closely watched, as similar events in the past have faced criticism over inadequate infrastructure. With the festival approaching, all eyes are on the authorities to deliver a safe and smooth experience for the pilgrims.
