West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday inaugurated the state government's first-ever Durga Puja celebration at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, marking a significant shift in the state's approach to the festival. The mega event, organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, aims to promote traditional religious practices and community participation.

Speaking at the event, Banerjee emphasized that Durga Pujas will now follow proper religious traditions, and announced that 12,400 additional community Durga Pujas are being organized across West Bengal this year. This move comes amid political tensions over cultural events in the state, with the BJP government seeking to assert its influence over the iconic festival.

The decision to host a state-sponsored Durga Puja has sparked debates about the separation of religion and state, with opposition parties accusing the government of politicizing the festival. The event is expected to draw large crowds and set a precedent for future celebrations, potentially reshaping the cultural landscape of West Bengal.
