Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has announced the launch of minor degrees for its students, aimed at skill enhancement and entrepreneurship development. The decision, approved by the university's academic council, will allow undergraduate students to earn additional credentials in emerging areas alongside their major disciplines. The program is set to be implemented from the upcoming academic year across all affiliated colleges in Karnataka.

According to VTU officials, the minor degrees will cover fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, robotics, and innovation management, among others. Students will need to complete a specified number of credits, typically 18-20, to earn a minor. The university believes this will bridge the skill gap and make graduates more industry-ready. "This initiative is part of our commitment to holistic education and to nurture job creators rather than just job seekers," said a VTU spokesperson.

The move is seen as a significant step in aligning higher education with the demands of the modern economy. It is expected to encourage interdisciplinary learning and provide students with a competitive edge in the job market. Other universities in India may follow suit, potentially transforming the landscape of technical education. VTU plans to collaborate with industry experts to design the curriculum and ensure its relevance.
