Virgin Group has unveiled a mock-up of its future cross-Channel train, confirming plans to launch rail services from London to continental Europe in 2030. The move sets up a direct challenge to Eurostar, which has held a monopoly on the route since the Channel Tunnel opened in 1994.

The company said the train's design will draw inspiration from its airline, cruise, and hotel arms, promising 'flash interiors, fancy food and maybe even a bar' to create 'something genuinely new'. Virgin hopes to outshine Eurostar by offering a more premium, experience-led service on the competitive London-Europe corridor.

The launch would mark the first serious competition for Eurostar, potentially leading to lower fares and improved services for passengers. However, Virgin must secure regulatory approvals, track access, and rolling stock before the 2030 target. Industry observers will watch closely to see if Virgin can translate its brand appeal into a viable cross-Channel operation.
