US stocks slid on Monday while oil prices swung sharply as renewed fears of a war with Iran rattled global markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped over 200 points, and the S&P 500 fell by 0.8%, as investors reacted to escalating rhetoric between Washington and Tehran. Oil prices initially spiked more than 2% on concerns over potential supply disruptions from the Middle East, but later reversed course after reports suggested the US and its allies might release crude from strategic reserves.

The volatility comes amid heightened tensions following recent military posturing in the Persian Gulf. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose to $75 a barrel before falling back to $73, while West Texas Intermediate followed a similar pattern. Analysts noted that the market is jittery over any sign of conflict that could choke off supplies from the region, which accounts for roughly a third of global oil production. 'The situation is fluid, and traders are pricing in a risk premium that could evaporate if diplomatic efforts gain traction,' said one energy strategist.

Global reactions were mixed, with European and Asian markets also showing signs of strain. The White House has not confirmed any decision on tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but officials said all options are on the table. Meanwhile, Iran warned against any aggressive moves, and key oil-consuming nations are monitoring the situation closely. The next few days will be critical in determining whether markets stabilize or plunge further into turmoil.
