US probes J-1 visa fraud at 9 universities
U.S. Labour Department has launched an investigation into alleged J-1 visa fraud at 9 universities, including Harvard, Yale & MIT, over concerns about American workers’ wages.
October 9, New Delhi: The U.S. Department of Labour announced an investigation into alleged J-1 visa fraud involving 9 major American universities including Harvard, Yale, Stanford and MIT, alleging that the programme was being used to undercut the wages of American graduate students and researchers.
The J-1 programme allows foreign nationals to enter the U.S. as exchange visitors for activities, including research, teaching, study and specialised professional work.
The announcement comes a day after the Department of Homeland Security proposed new fees for F-1 non-immigrant students seeking to participate in Optional Practical Training.
