The U.S. government has transferred approximately $1 billion worth of Bitcoin (12,267 BTC) from a wallet linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack to unlabeled wallets, according to blockchain intelligence firm Arkham. The move, which did not involve sending funds to an exchange, occurred just a day after $383 million in Bitcoin was sent to Coinbase Prime, indicating that no immediate sale is planned.

The Bitfinex hack, one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history, resulted in the loss of nearly 120,000 BTC. U.S. authorities seized a significant portion of these funds in 2022, and the recent transfers are part of the government's ongoing management of seized assets. Arkham's data shows the Bitcoin was moved to wallets not associated with any known exchange, suggesting a strategic holding rather than a liquidation.

The movement of such a large sum has implications for the cryptocurrency market, as investors often monitor government wallets for signs of potential sell-offs. However, the lack of exchange transfers indicates the government may be consolidating assets or preparing for a future auction. Market reactions have been muted so far, but analysts will continue to watch for any further activity from these wallets.
