Tirupattur police on Thursday arrested a man for illegally mining sand from the Palar river in Tamil Nadu's Tirupattur district. The arrest was made during a routine patrol, according to officials, though the suspect's identity and the quantity of sand seized have not been disclosed.

Illegal sand mining has been a persistent problem in Tamil Nadu, particularly along the Palar river, which flows through Vellore, Ranipet, and Tirupattur districts. The activity causes severe environmental degradation, including riverbed erosion, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of groundwater. It also deprives the state exchequer of significant revenue. Despite stringent laws and periodic crackdowns, illegal mining continues due to high demand from the construction industry and weak enforcement in rural areas.

The arrest underscores the challenges faced by authorities in curbing illegal sand mining. Environmental activists have called for stricter monitoring and harsher penalties for offenders. The police have registered a case under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and are investigating whether the suspect is part of a larger network. Further arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
