Renewed warfare in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region is intensifying, raising urgent questions about whether neighboring countries will intervene. The escalation comes after months of relative calm following a 2022 peace deal, with reports of heavy clashes between federal forces and Tigrayan fighters. The conflict threatens to destabilize the already volatile Horn of Africa.

The Tigray war, which began in November 2020, has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions. The 2022 Pretoria Agreement ended major hostilities, but underlying tensions over territorial disputes and political autonomy persist. Ethiopia's neighbors, including Eritrea, Sudan, and Djibouti, have vested interests in the conflict, with Eritrea having previously supported Ethiopian federal forces. Regional bodies like the African Union and IGAD have called for restraint, but their influence is limited.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with the United States and European Union urging de-escalation. A wider regional war could disrupt trade routes and exacerbate humanitarian crises. As fighting continues, the risk of neighboring countries being drawn into the conflict grows, potentially transforming it into a broader regional conflagration. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but the window for peaceful resolution is narrowing.
