Tether's USDT 'Coming Home' to Bitcoin This Month After Decade-Long Absence

A Tether-backed project called Utexo plans to enable private USDT transfers, direct swaps between BTC and USDT, and BTC-backed loans on the Bitcoin network this month. The move marks USDT's return to Bitcoin over a decade after its debut there, with most transaction data kept off Bitcoin's public ledger.

Tether's USDT is set to 'come home' to Bitcoin this month, more than a decade after its initial debut on the network, according to a CoinDesk report. A Tether-backed project called Utexo is behind the initiative, which aims to support private USDT transfers, direct swaps between BTC and USDT, and loans backed by BTC, while keeping most transaction data off Bitcoin's public ledger.

The development marks a significant shift for USDT, which originally launched on Bitcoin via the Omni Layer protocol in 2014 before expanding to Ethereum and other blockchains. Utexo's approach seeks to combine Bitcoin's security with enhanced privacy features, potentially attracting users who prioritize confidentiality in transactions. The project's focus on BTC-backed loans and direct swaps could also deepen liquidity and utility within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

If successful, Utexo's integration could reignite activity on Bitcoin's network for stablecoin transactions, which have largely migrated to faster and cheaper chains. However, privacy-focused features may draw regulatory scrutiny, especially as global authorities tighten oversight on cryptocurrency transactions. The crypto community will be watching closely to see how Utexo balances innovation with compliance when it launches later this month.
