Telangana Power Bills to Surge from November 2026 as ERC Approves ₹5,420 Crore True-Up Recovery

The Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved the recovery of ₹5,420 crore in true-up charges, which will increase monthly electricity bills for consumers starting November 2026. The recovery will continue until March 2029 for TGSPDCL consumers and until December 2028 for TGNPDCL consumers.

Electricity consumers in Telangana will face higher monthly bills starting November 2026, following the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission's (ERC) approval of the recovery of ₹5,420 crore in true-up charges. The recovery will be implemented over multiple years, ending in March 2029 for consumers under the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) and in December 2028 for those under the Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL).

True-up charges are levied to recover the difference between the actual cost of power procurement and the revenue collected from consumers over a period. The ERC's decision allows the distribution companies to pass on these accumulated costs to consumers, leading to a significant increase in monthly electricity bills. The recovery period spans several years, with TGSPDCL consumers bearing the charges until March 2029 and TGNPDCL consumers until December 2028.

The move is expected to impact households and businesses across Telangana, potentially straining budgets and increasing operational costs for industries. Consumer groups may challenge the decision, citing the financial burden. The ERC's order underscores the ongoing challenges in the power sector, including cost recovery and financial sustainability of distribution companies. Further details on the exact tariff impact and implementation mechanism are awaited.
