Senator Richard Blumenthal, a senior Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has opened an inquiry into the financial relationship between Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin. The probe, confirmed on Wednesday, focuses on the New York-based financial services firm's role as a custodian of Tether's reserves and its broader partnership with the crypto company.

Cantor Fitzgerald, led by CEO Howard Lutnick, has served as Tether's custodian since 2021, holding billions of dollars in U.S. Treasury bills backing the stablecoin. The investigation gains urgency as Democrats position themselves to potentially reclaim the Senate majority in the upcoming elections, with Blumenthal's subcommittee known for aggressive oversight of financial misconduct. Tether has faced longstanding questions about the transparency of its reserves, though it has consistently denied wrongdoing.

The probe could intensify regulatory pressure on stablecoins and their banking partners, potentially leading to new legislative proposals. Crypto industry advocates warn that excessive scrutiny may drive innovation offshore, while consumer groups applaud the oversight. The Senate subcommittee is expected to request documents and testimony from both Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether, with hearings possible in the coming months.
