The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), the Travancore Devaswom Board, and other agencies to expedite preparations for the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season. A Division Bench issued the directive while considering two reports submitted by Sabarimala Special Commissioner R. Jayakrishnan, which highlighted deficiencies in waste management in Erumely during 'maasa puja' and festival seasons, and the need to repair KWA's main booster stations at Neelimala and Appachimedu.

The reports underscored persistent challenges in managing the massive influx of pilgrims, particularly in Erumely, a key transit point. The Special Commissioner noted that waste disposal mechanisms were inadequate during peak seasons, posing environmental and health hazards. Additionally, the booster stations at Neelimala and Appachimedu, critical for water supply to the hill shrine, require urgent repairs to ensure uninterrupted service. The court's intervention follows previous directives to improve facilities for devotees.

The High Court's order places significant pressure on the KWA and Devaswom Board to complete repairs and implement robust waste management plans before the pilgrimage season begins. With millions expected to visit Sabarimala, the effectiveness of these preparations will be closely watched. The court is likely to monitor progress in subsequent hearings, and any delays could invite further judicial scrutiny. The development also highlights the broader need for sustainable infrastructure at major religious sites.
