Russia to Absorb 70,000 Indian Skilled Workers This Year, Govt Tells Parliamentary Panel

The Indian government has informed a parliamentary panel that Russia has agreed to accept approximately 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who chaired the meeting on India-Russia relations, also briefed members on New Delhi's stance on the Ukraine conflict and its diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful settlement.

Russia has agreed to take in around 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year, the Indian government told a parliamentary panel on Monday. The announcement came during a meeting chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who briefed members on the state of India-Russia relations.

During the meeting, Mr. Jaishankar also apprised the panel of New Delhi's stance on the ongoing Ukraine conflict and its recent diplomatic efforts to contribute toward a peaceful settlement. The labour mobility arrangement is seen as a significant step in deepening bilateral ties, with Russia facing workforce shortages amid the war and India seeking overseas employment opportunities for its skilled professionals.

The development underscores India's balancing act between its longstanding strategic partnership with Russia and its growing ties with Western nations. It remains to be seen how the international community, particularly Ukraine's allies, will react to the expanded labour cooperation. The Indian government is expected to facilitate the migration process, while continuing its diplomatic push for peace in Ukraine.
