Rice Prices Soar Across India: Government Urges Farmers to Switch Crops

The central government has issued an advisory to states urging farmers to shift to short-duration and less-water-intensive crops like pulses and millets, as rice prices continue to rise across India. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized that changing crop strategy in rain-fed areas is the need of the hour. The move aims to address supply constraints and stabilize prices.

The central government has issued an advisory to all states, urging farmers to shift from water-intensive crops like rice to short-duration and less-water-intensive alternatives such as pulses and millets. The directive comes amid a sustained rise in rice prices across the country, raising concerns about food inflation and supply chain pressures. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in June, underscored the urgency, stating, “Changing crop strategy in rain-fed areas has become the need of the hour.”

The advisory is part of a broader strategy to promote crop diversification, particularly in rain-fed regions where water scarcity and erratic monsoon patterns have exacerbated cultivation challenges. Rice, a staple for millions, has seen prices climb due to factors including lower acreage, export restrictions, and adverse weather. The government hopes that shifting to pulses and millets will not only conserve water but also enhance nutritional security and farmer incomes. However, the transition requires robust support systems, including assured procurement and market linkages.

The rising rice prices have significant implications for household budgets and overall inflation, potentially influencing monetary policy decisions. While the advisory is non-binding, it signals a policy tilt toward sustainable agriculture. States are expected to formulate action plans, and the Centre may introduce incentives to encourage the shift. The success of this initiative will depend on effective implementation and farmer cooperation, with global markets watching India's efforts to balance food security and resource management.
