Rebel TMC MPs Seek 15 More Days to Respond to Lok Sabha Disqualification Notices

Rebel Trinamool Congress MPs have requested an additional 15 days from the Lok Sabha secretariat to respond to notices regarding a disqualification plea. The MPs, including Ghosh Dastidar, say they need more time to collate required documents. The extension request delays the resolution of the disqualification case, which could impact the party's strength in the Lower House.

Rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs have sought an additional 15 days from the Lok Sabha secretariat to file their response to notices concerning a disqualification plea. The request was made by Ghosh Dastidar, one of the rebel MPs, who stated that they have not yet collated all the necessary documents required to prepare their reply. The notices stem from a petition seeking their disqualification under the anti-defection law.

The rebel MPs, who have been at odds with the TMC leadership, are facing potential disqualification for allegedly violating the party whip. The anti-defection law allows for disqualification if a member voluntarily gives up party membership or votes against the party's direction. The MPs have been given time to respond, but the complexity of the case and the volume of documents have prompted this extension request. The Lok Sabha secretariat is yet to rule on the extension.

This development prolongs the uncertainty over the political future of the rebel MPs and could affect the TMC's strength in the Lok Sabha. If disqualified, the MPs would lose their seats, potentially triggering by-elections. The case is being closely watched as it tests the robustness of the anti-defection law and could set a precedent for similar cases in the future. The next steps hinge on the secretariat's decision on the extension and the subsequent response from the MPs.
