Aizawl 10th October,2026: Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Prof. Lalnilawma expressed deep regret over the public's hardship in not receiving adequate water supply due to natural calamities. He stated that the department is making every effort to resolve the issue and urged the public to use water judiciously.

The Minister made these remarks yesterday during his inspection of restoration works at the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme (GAWSS) Phase-I site along the Tlawng River, where water intake machinery and associated infrastructure were previously damaged by Cyclone Remal. Expressing satisfaction with the elevation of the pump house and key installations above flood levels, he noted that the quality of materials being used is dependable, having undergone thorough inspection by the Public Works Department (PWD). While lamenting that natural disasters have disrupted regular, abundant water supply to the public, he urged the workforce to intensify their efforts and give their best. At the same time, he appealed to the public for their patience and understanding, assuring them that work is underway at full capacity, and urged citizens to conserve water until the restoration work is fully completed.

The reconstruction work to elevate the water pumping machinery beyond the flood levels of the Tlawng River commenced on February 3 this year, which necessitated the temporary suspension of pumping operations under Phase-I starting June 1. Efforts are continuing steadily to resume pumping at the earliest possible date; approximately 52% of the work has been completed so far. If progress proceeds without hindrance, the civil works are expected to be finished within December this year.
