Nobel Laureate Navi Pillay Blasts Trump's ICC Sanctions as 'Unacceptable' and 'Unheard Of'
Navi Pillay, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former UN human rights chief, has condemned the Trump administration's sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court as 'unacceptable' and 'unheard of'. The penalties mark an unprecedented escalation against the international tribunal, raising concerns about the future of global justice.
Navi Pillay, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Tuesday condemned the Trump administration's sweeping sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) as 'unacceptable' and 'unheard of'. Pillay, speaking in The Hague, said the penalties represented an unprecedented attack on the international tribunal, which is tasked with prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
The sanctions, announced by the Trump administration last week, target ICC officials and their families, freezing assets and banning travel to the United States. The move came in response to the ICC's investigation into alleged war crimes by US forces in Afghanistan and by Israeli forces in the Palestinian territories. 'This is an assault on the rule of law and a direct challenge to the global justice system,' Pillay said. 'It is unacceptable that a permanent member of the UN Security Council would seek to punish judges and prosecutors for doing their job.' The ICC has vowed to continue its work undeterred.
The sanctions have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups, European allies, and legal experts, who warn they could cripple the court's ability to investigate atrocities. The European Union has called the measures 'unacceptable' and is considering a coordinated response. Meanwhile, the ICC's Assembly of States Parties is set to meet next month to discuss how to support the court. The standoff raises fundamental questions about the future of international accountability and the willingness of powerful states to submit to the rule of law.
