Mahanadi Water Dispute: Odisha and Chhattisgarh Close to Historic Resolution, Says CM Majhi

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the resolution of the long-standing Mahanadi river water dispute with Chhattisgarh is progressing and a final framework is expected soon. The dispute, which dates back to 2016, centers on Chhattisgarh's upstream projects affecting water flow into Odisha. Majhi's remarks signal a potential breakthrough in one of India's most contentious inter-state water conflicts.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated on [date] that the resolution of the Mahanadi river water dispute with Chhattisgarh is on track, with a final framework expected soon. The announcement came during a press briefing in Bhubaneswar, where Majhi expressed optimism about reaching an agreement.

The Mahanadi dispute dates back to 2016 when Odisha approached the Supreme Court, alleging that Chhattisgarh's construction of barrages and dams upstream was reducing water flow into Odisha, impacting agriculture and drinking water supply. In 2018, the Supreme Court directed the formation of an inter-state tribunal, which is currently adjudicating the matter. Majhi said, “We are gradually moving closer to a solution and I hope that the final framework for resolving the issue will emerge very soon.”

The resolution, if achieved, could serve as a model for other inter-state water disputes in India, such as the Cauvery and Krishna conflicts. It would also provide much-needed relief to farmers in both states who have suffered from water scarcity. The next steps involve continued negotiations between the two states, with the tribunal expected to play a crucial role in finalizing the framework. Global observers are watching closely, as water-sharing agreements are increasingly critical in the face of climate change.
