A study conducted by French firm SUEZ has revealed significant deterioration in water pipelines across several localities in Kochi, Kerala. The assessment, commissioned by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), found that aged and sedimented pipelines are severely impacting the water-carrying capacity of the distribution network, potentially affecting supply to thousands of residents.

The SUEZ study, which evaluated the condition of KWA pipelines, identified widespread degradation due to years of wear and tear, sediment buildup, and inadequate maintenance. While specific figures on water loss or affected areas were not immediately available, officials indicate that the findings underscore the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades. The KWA has not yet announced a timeline for repairs or replacement.

The deterioration of Kochi's water infrastructure could exacerbate water scarcity issues in the region, especially during peak summer months. It also raises questions about the sustainability of urban water systems in rapidly growing Indian cities. The KWA is expected to review the SUEZ report and may seek funding for rehabilitation projects. Further details are awaited as the authority formulates its response.
