Kochi Chander Kunj Towers Set for Demolition Within Six Months, Mumbai Firm Edifice Engineering Confirms
Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering, in partnership with South Africa's Jet Demolition, is aiming to complete the demolition of Kochi's Chander Kunj towers 'B' and 'C' and clear debris within six months. The firms, which previously handled the Maradu apartment demolitions, conducted a two-day inspection of the apartments in June. The timeline hinges on regulatory approvals and safety measures for nearby residents.
Mumbai-based Edifice Engineering has announced a six-month target to demolish the Chander Kunj apartment towers 'B' and 'C' in Kochi and clear the resulting debris. The firm, working with South Africa's Jet Demolition, conducted a two-day inspection of the apartments in June. The demolition is part of a broader effort to address illegal constructions in the region.
Edifice Engineering and Jet Demolition previously oversaw the demolition of the Maradu apartment complexes in Kochi, which were razed in 2020 following Supreme Court orders. The Chander Kunj towers, located in the Kalamassery area, have been at the center of a legal dispute over alleged violations of coastal regulation zone norms. The inspection in June aimed to assess the structural condition and plan the safe removal of the buildings.
The six-month timeline is contingent on securing necessary approvals from local authorities and ensuring the safety of nearby residents. The demolition process is expected to involve controlled implosion techniques, similar to those used in Maradu. The outcome will be closely watched as a precedent for handling similar illegal structures across Kerala and beyond.
