In a bid to promote Kannada literature and counter the growing influence of digital media among the youth, Additional Regional Commissioner Dr. P. Shivaraju flagged off a Dasara book chariot in Mysuru on Tuesday. The chariot, part of the ongoing Dasara festivities, will travel across the city and surrounding areas to encourage reading habits and showcase works by Kannada authors.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Shivaraju expressed concern that the younger generation is increasingly drawn to digital platforms, leading to a decline in book reading. He urged parents and educators to instill the habit of reading from an early age. The chariot carries a collection of books, including novels, poetry, and historical works, and will host interactive sessions with authors. The initiative is organized by the Department of Kannada and Culture in association with the Mysuru Dasara Committee.

The move comes amid broader debates about the impact of digital media on traditional literary cultures. While some welcome the initiative as a necessary step to preserve regional languages, others argue that digital platforms can also be harnessed to promote literature. The chariot will tour for the duration of Dasara, culminating in a book fair at the Mysore Palace grounds. Organizers hope the initiative will spark a renewed interest in Kannada literature among young readers.
