Hyderabad’s ₹8,500 Common Mobility Pass Flops as Commuters Cry Foul
Hyderabad's new common mobility pass, priced at ₹8,500 per month, offers unlimited travel on Metro Rail and RTC buses within ORR limits but excludes MMTS and last-mile services. Commuters argue that affordable fares, feeder connectivity, and inter-agency coordination are essential for seamless travel, rendering the pass ineffective.
Hyderabad’s newly introduced common mobility pass, priced at ₹8,500 per month, has failed to gain traction among commuters. The pass, which allows unlimited travel on Metro Rail and RTC buses within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits, was launched as a step toward integrated public transportation. However, it excludes MMTS services and last-mile connectivity options, prompting criticism from daily commuters who find it impractical and overpriced.
Commuters argue that the pass does not address the core issues of affordable fares and seamless connectivity. At ₹8,500 a month, it is beyond the reach of many regular travelers, especially when it does not cover all modes of transport. The exclusion of MMTS, a key suburban rail network, and last-mile services like auto-rickshaws and shared cabs means users still face fragmented travel. Experts emphasize that coordination among transport agencies—Metro Rail, RTC, and MMTS—is crucial for any integrated ticketing system to succeed. Without feeder services and a unified fare structure, the pass remains a costly experiment.
The lukewarm response to the pass highlights the challenges of implementing integrated mobility solutions in Indian cities. While the intent to promote public transport is commendable, the execution must prioritize affordability and convenience. Authorities may need to revisit the pricing, include all modes of transport, and improve last-mile connectivity to make the pass viable. As other cities watch, Hyderabad’s experience could serve as a cautionary tale for similar initiatives nationwide.
