As part of Wildlife Week 2026, the J&K Wildlife Protection Department organized a Heritage Walk along the Manda Eco-Trail through Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary to promote wildlife conservation, ecological connectivity and public participation.

Held under the theme “Walk for Wildlife, Walk for Drug Free Society,” the walkathon began from Hari Palace, Manda, traversed Kamala-Top at Manda Hills and culminated at the Wildlife Complex, Manda.

Around 500 participants, including students, nature enthusiasts, academicians, researchers, NGO representatives, fitness groups, senior citizens and officers from various departments, took part in the event. The walk was flagged off by Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Ecology and Environment Department, Sheetal Nanda.

Speaking on the occasion, Nanda appreciated the Wildlife Protection Department for sensitizing the public, particularly the younger generation, towards wildlife conservation under the guidance of Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K, Suneesh Buxy.

She said initiatives such as the Heritage Walk help create awareness about the importance of healthy habitats in maintaining ecological balance, protecting natural resources and ensuring long-term prosperity and well-being.

The programme was organized in collaboration with Art of Living, MOBE and Heal Foundation. It included a warm-up session, nature trail, interactive quiz, pledge on signature walls and display of student artwork showcasing the faunal diversity of J&K.

Participants were also sensitized about responsible conduct in protected areas, including avoiding single-use plastic, staying on designated trails, refraining from littering and maintaining silence to prevent disturbance to wildlife.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to conserve wildlife, protect natural habitats and promote a drug-free society. Wildlife Week 2026 is being observed across the country from October 2 to 8 under the theme “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife.”
