Half of UK Voters Want EU Rejoin, Megapoll Finds — Could Boost Labour by 7 Points

A new megapoll by the Messina Group finds that nearly half of UK voters support rejoining the European Union, and that Labour could gain up to seven percentage points if the prime minister campaigned for re-entry in a fresh referendum. The findings bolster pro-EU figures in No 10 but some senior cabinet ministers remain privately cautious about reopening Brexit divisions.

A new megapoll conducted by The Messina Group (TMG) has found that almost half of UK voters support rejoining the European Union, and that Labour could boost its vote share by as much as seven percentage points if the prime minister offered a fresh referendum and campaigned to re-enter the bloc. The findings, published exclusively by The Guardian, come as Andy Burnham’s personal preference to rejoin the EU after the next election gains traction among the electorate.

The poll underscores a shifting public mood nearly a decade after the 2016 Brexit referendum, with roughly 50% of respondents backing re-entry. According to TMG, a pro-rejoin campaign by Labour’s leader could significantly expand the party’s electoral coalition. However, cabinet ministers concerned about reopening the divisive Brexit debate are privately urging Burnham and other senior figures to proceed with caution, warning that the issue could alienate swing voters in key constituencies.

The results will bolster those within No 10 who favour negotiating a closer relationship with Brussels, but they also expose deep internal divisions. As Labour weighs its next manifesto, the poll is likely to intensify debate over whether to adopt a formal rejoin stance or pursue a more incremental approach. Global observers will watch closely, as any shift in the UK’s EU policy could reshape trade, security, and diplomatic ties across Europe.
