Google announced on Tuesday that it is upgrading its Gemini AI to function as an autonomous agent for businesses, capable of planning and executing tasks across various workplace applications and systems. The agent, which can delegate work to subagents and leverage multiple AI models, is also being given its own workplace identity, complete with an email address, according to TechCrunch.

The development builds on Google's ongoing efforts to integrate AI into enterprise workflows. By enabling Gemini to operate independently, Google aims to position itself as a leader in the emerging field of agentic AI, where systems can perform complex, multi-step tasks without human intervention. The move follows similar initiatives from competitors like Microsoft and OpenAI, which have also been developing AI agents for business use.

This shift could significantly impact how businesses automate operations, potentially increasing efficiency but also raising questions about job displacement and security. Industry analysts suggest that while agentic AI promises to streamline workflows, it also requires robust oversight to prevent errors or misuse. Google has not yet announced a release date or pricing for the new capabilities, but early adopters in the enterprise sector are expected to pilot the technology in the coming months.
