SWI Group has raised 800 million euros ($894 million) to repurpose Genesis Digital Assets, a bitcoin miner acquired from the FTX bankruptcy, into an AI-focused data center. SWI Group announced on Wednesday that it has raised 800 million euros ($894 million) to transform Genesis Digital Assets, a bitcoin mining company acquired through the FTX bankruptcy proceedings, into an artificial intelligence-focused data center. The fundraise, one of the largest in the AI infrastructure space this year, underscores the accelerating shift from cryptocurrency mining to AI computing as demand for high-performance data centers surges.

Genesis Digital Assets was among the assets seized during the collapse of FTX, the crypto exchange that filed for bankruptcy in November 2022. SWI Group acquired the miner as part of the bankruptcy estate and now plans to retrofit its facilities to support AI workloads, which require specialized hardware and significantly more power. The 800 million euro raise, led by undisclosed institutional investors, will fund the conversion of existing mining sites and the procurement of AI chips. Neither SWI Group nor Genesis Digital Assets responded immediately to requests for comment.

The pivot reflects a broader trend in the tech industry: as cryptocurrency mining margins tighten and AI demand explodes, mining companies with access to cheap energy and large-scale facilities are increasingly repositioning themselves as AI data center operators. The move could signal a new lease on life for assets stranded by the FTX collapse, while also intensifying competition for AI infrastructure. Industry analysts will be watching whether SWI can successfully execute the transition and whether other bankrupt crypto miners follow suit.
