EU Paralysed: Public Fury Over Israel Grows, But Brussels Won't Budge

The EU remains deadlocked on taking collective action against Israel over its actions in the West Bank and Gaza, despite intensifying public anger and a dramatic UK shift toward sanctions on illegal settlements. France and Canada have joined the UK in pledging to ban settlement goods, but the bloc has failed to produce a wider ripple effect, exposing familiar internal fault lines.

The European Union is failing to act on growing public criticism of Israel, remaining paralysed along familiar internal fault lines even as international momentum builds for sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements. The impasse comes after the British government announced sweeping trade sanctions on illegal settlements and condemned 'ethnic cleansing' in the West Bank by state-backed 'settler terrorists', a move that some EU diplomats hoped would galvanise the bloc. So far, it has not.

While France and Canada joined the UK in pledging to ban goods from illegal settlements and impose sanctions on 'those who facilitate them or profit from them', there has been no wider ripple effect across Europe. The EU's inability to forge a unified response reflects long-standing divisions among member states over Israel policy, with some capitals reluctant to confront Israel while others push for tougher measures. The bloc's paralysis stands in contrast to the UK's dramatic policy shift, which has intensified pressure on Brussels to act.

The EU's continued inaction risks further eroding its credibility as a global diplomatic actor, a phenomenon critics have described as 'self-imposed irrelevance'. With public anger mounting across Europe over Israel's actions against Palestinians, the gap between voter sentiment and official policy is widening. The next steps remain unclear, but the failure to translate public pressure into collective action could deepen the EU's internal rifts and weaken its standing on the world stage.
