Ebola Outbreak in DRC Surpasses 4,000 Deaths as Health Workers Battle Unpaid Wages

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now claimed more than 4,000 lives, with over 8,300 cases recorded since it was declared in eastern Congo on May 15. Health workers on the front lines are struggling to get paid, hampering the response to the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surpassed 4,000 deaths, with more than 8,300 cases recorded since the outbreak was declared in eastern Congo on May 15, according to health authorities. The milestone makes it the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, trailing only the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.

The outbreak, centered in the conflict-ridden eastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, has been exacerbated by insecurity, community mistrust, and now financial woes for health workers. Reports indicate that many frontline responders have not been paid for months, hindering efforts to contain the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly warned that without adequate compensation and support, the response could falter, leading to further spread.

The unpaid wages have sparked frustration among health workers, some of whom have threatened strikes, potentially crippling vaccination and treatment campaigns. International donors and the Congolese government are under pressure to address the payment delays. The WHO and partners continue to urge sustained funding and community engagement to bring the outbreak under control, but the situation remains precarious as the death toll climbs.
