Director Agriculture Kashmir flags off farmers group for exposure visit to PAU

Director Agriculture Kashmir Sartaj Ahmad Shah flagged off 45 Srinagar farmers for an exposure visit to Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, under HADP, to enhance skills in medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation, processing and high-value agribusiness opportunities.

Srinagar, Oct 12: Director Agriculture Kashmir Sartaj Ahmad Shah today flagged off a group of 45 progressive farmers from different zones of Srinagar district for an interstate exposure visit and capacity-building programme at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana.

The programme has been organised by the Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare Department, Srinagar, under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) project on the promotion of aromatic and medicinal plants.

Interacting with the farmers, the Director said the primary objective of the exposure visit is to enhance their skills in the cultivation and management of medicinal and aromatic plants, enabling them to transition from subsistence farming to high-return agribusiness.

He said Kashmir’s unique agro-climatic conditions offer significant potential for cultivating aromatic and medicinal plants. The exposure visit will help farmers explore new income-generating opportunities through crops such as lavender, rosemary and other specialised medicinal and aromatic plants suited to the region.

Shah urged the participating farmers to make the most of the programme and gain practical knowledge about high-value varieties, nursery management, post-harvest extraction, processing techniques and market dynamics.

Chief Agriculture Officer Srinagar Aijaz Hassan Mir, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer Srinagar and other senior officers of the department were present on the occasion.
