Leaders from government, diplomacy, business, media, education and other sectors gathered at Okada Manila on Sept. 25 for the Asia’s Modern Hero Awards 2026, an annual recognition program honoring individuals and organizations for leadership, public service, professional excellence and contributions to society. With the theme “Heroism in Action,” the ceremony was presented by the Golden Icons Foundation, produced by Asia’s Golden Icons Awards Inc. (AGIA) and powered by Chunnel and Channel Realty Marketing and Development Corp. The event brought together personalities from the Philippines and abroad, including members of the diplomatic community recognized for their contributions to international relations and cooperation. Palestinian Ambassador to the Philippines Mounir Y.K. Anastas received the distinction Asia’s Hero of Principled Diplomacy. Czech Ambassador to the Philippines Karel Hejč was recognized as Asia’s Modern Hero of Distinguished Diplomatic Leadership. Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino was honored as Asia’s Modern Hero in Diplomatic Statesmanship and International Cooperation. Champion of diaspora relations Among the government officials honored was Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Chairperson Dante Francis “Klink” Ang II, who was recognized as Asia’s Modern Hero in Advancing Philippine Diaspora Relations. In accepting the award, Ang shared the recognition with CFO personnel and Filipino communities and organizations working with the commission to strengthen diaspora engagement. “I accept this award not only in my name, but on behalf of the men and women of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, whose work every day brings us closer to Filipino communities around the world,” Ang said. He emphasized that Filipinos who have established their lives overseas remain part of the national community and can contribute to the Philippines through their knowledge, expertise, networks, resources and experience. “Our work is anchored on a simple but important principle: Filipinos do not stop being part of our national community simply because they have built their lives overseas. We want them to remain connected to the Philippines, and we want to create meaningful opportunities for them to participate in our country’s development,” he said. Ang said the commission’s work supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s goal of making migration a choice rather than a necessity while ensuring that Filipinos living overseas remain connected to the country and have opportunities to participate in its development. He added that the recognition carries both encouragement and responsibility for the commission. “This award is both an honor and a responsibility. It tells us that the work of strengthening Philippine diaspora relations matters, but it also reminds us that there is much more that we can do,” Ang said. He underscored the need to bring government closer to nonresident Filipinos and create more accessible pathways for them to participate in national and local development. Ang also stressed that the Filipino diaspora should be recognized not only for its economic contributions but also for the knowledge, expertise, networks, philanthropy and experience that Filipinos overseas can bring to the country. “To the executive board and awards council of the Golden Icons Foundation, Asia’s Golden Icons Awards and events, and everyone behind this recognition, thank you for this honor and for recognizing the importance of strengthening the relationship between the Philippines and Filipinos around the world,” Ang said. “I receive this award as an affirmation of the work being done by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas and by the many people and organizations that continue to serve and engage our Filipino communities abroad,” he added. “At the CFO, we work with permanent and long-term migrants, expatriates, dual citizens, marriage migrants, their descendants, and other people of Filipino descent, all of whom we collectively refer to as nonresident Filipinos or NRFs. Our responsibility is to ensure that wherever they may be in the world, they remain connected to the Philippines and have meaningful opportunities to participate in its development,” he said. “Through the Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino or Linkapil program, Youth Leaders in the Diaspora or YouLead, and other diaspora engagement programs, we create avenues for our NRFs to contribute their expertise, networks, resources and experiences, while strengthening their ties to their heritage and communities back home. This work supports the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of making migration a choice rather than a necessity,” he added. “This award carries both encouragement and responsibility. It encourages us to continue what we have started. It also reminds us that there is still much more to do in bringing government closer to our NRFs and creating stronger partnerships between our diaspora and the Philippines. I hope this recognition also draws greater attention to the important role that our Filipino communities overseas play in national development. Maraming salamat po.
