Delhi Chokes at AQI 377 as Diwali Firework Curbs Take Effect
Delhi's air quality index stood at 377, in the 'very poor' category, on Wednesday morning as firework restrictions entered force ahead of Diwali. The reading underscores the annual winter pollution crisis in the Indian capital, driven by seasonal factors and Diwali fireworks. Authorities have imposed curbs on firecrackers in an effort to limit further deterioration.
Delhi's air quality index reading stood at 377 on Wednesday morning, placing the Indian capital in the "very poor" category as restrictions on fireworks entered force ahead of the Diwali festival, according to BBC News.
The reading reflects the recurring winter pollution crisis in Delhi, when stagnant air, falling temperatures, and seasonal emissions trap pollutants near the ground. Diwali fireworks have historically compounded the problem, prompting authorities to impose curbs on their sale and use in an effort to prevent further deterioration of air quality.
The restrictions highlight the broader challenge facing Indian policymakers as they balance cultural traditions with public health concerns. With air quality already at hazardous levels before the festival, residents face heightened health risks, and further monitoring will determine whether the firework curbs meaningfully limit the seasonal spike in pollution.
