Chagos Deal on Brink: UK-Mauritius Talks Stall as Chagossians Fear 'Time Is Running Out'

Renewed talks between the UK and Mauritius over the stalled Chagos Islands sovereignty agreement have revived hopes for resettlement, but ageing Chagossians fear further delays could dash their lifelong dream of returning home. The deal, which would cede sovereignty of the strategic Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius while securing the US military base on Diego Garcia, has been in limbo since negotiations paused earlier this year.

Negotiations between the United Kingdom and Mauritius over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands have stalled, according to Al Jazeera, despite renewed talks that had raised hopes for the resettlement of displaced Chagossians. The long-running dispute centers on the strategic Indian Ocean archipelago, which includes the US military base on Diego Garcia, and has left the indigenous Chagossian community in limbo for decades.

The stalled agreement, which would see the UK cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while maintaining the US base on Diego Garcia, has been a contentious issue since negotiations began. The Chagossians, who were forcibly removed from the islands between 1968 and 1973 to make way for the military facility, have long sought the right to return. Many ageing members of the community now fear that further delays could mean they will never see their homeland again. While no official statements have been released by either government, sources indicate that sticking points remain over the terms of the base lease and compensation for the Chagossians.

The impasse carries significant implications for regional geopolitics, as the Diego Garcia base remains a vital US military asset in the Indian Ocean. Any delay in resolving the sovereignty dispute could strain UK-Mauritius relations and prolong the suffering of the Chagossian diaspora. International observers, including human rights groups, have called for a swift resolution that respects the rights of the Chagossian people. With the UK government facing domestic pressure and Mauritius insisting on its territorial integrity, the next round of talks will be closely watched for signs of progress.
