The Suid-Afrikaanse Koorraad (SAKR) launched its 2026 season on Saturday with sectional competitions at the Athlone Civic Centre in Cape Town, South Africa, setting the stage for the Norman Duncan Heritage Cup finale on Sunday. The event drew choirs from across the Cape Flats, marking a spirited return of the Cape Malay choral tradition after disruptions in recent years.

SAKR, the governing body for Cape Malay choirs, organizes annual competitions that celebrate the community's rich musical heritage, blending Dutch, Indonesian, and African influences. The sectional rounds in Athlone featured multiple categories, with choirs vying for a spot in the prestigious Heritage Cup. Organizers noted increased participation and audience turnout, reflecting a growing interest in preserving this cultural art form. “This season is about bringing our people together and keeping our heritage alive,” said a SAKR spokesperson.

The Norman Duncan Heritage Cup finale on Sunday is expected to draw hundreds of spectators and feature top choirs from the region. The event underscores the resilience of Cape Malay culture and its role in fostering community cohesion. As the season progresses, SAKR plans to expand its outreach, with hopes of attracting younger generations to ensure the tradition thrives for years to come.
