Navi Pillay, the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday. Pillay, a South African jurist who served as the UN’s top human rights official from 2008 to 2014, was recognized for her lifelong dedication to justice and accountability.

The Nobel Committee cited Pillay’s “efforts to promote peace and international law” as the basis for the award. During her tenure at the UN, Pillay was a vocal critic of human rights abuses worldwide, from Sri Lanka to Syria, and she previously served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she played a key role in landmark genocide convictions.

The award comes amid rising global tensions and challenges to international legal frameworks. Pillay’s recognition is likely to be seen as a reaffirmation of the importance of human rights and the rule of law. Reactions from world leaders and human rights organizations are expected in the coming hours, with many likely to praise her courage and unwavering commitment to justice.
