Stacks, a leading Bitcoin layer-2 network, has announced a two-phase rollout for its Bitcoin staking mechanism, introducing PoX-5 and PoX-6. PoX-5 is currently live, allowing a select group of participants to stake Bitcoin and earn rewards, while PoX-6, expected in a future upgrade, will democratize access by enabling anyone to participate. The development marks a significant step in expanding Bitcoin's utility beyond simple transactions.

Proof of Transfer (PoX) is Stacks' unique consensus mechanism that connects to Bitcoin's security. PoX-5, the current iteration, builds on previous versions by refining reward distribution and stacking mechanics. According to Stacks, PoX-6 will introduce key changes to lower barriers to entry, potentially increasing the number of stackers and overall network security. The phased approach ensures stability while scaling participation.

The move could have broad implications for the Bitcoin ecosystem, as it allows BTC holders to earn yield without wrapping or lending their assets. Competitors in the Bitcoin staking space, such as Babylon and Rootstock, are also vying for market share. Stacks' gradual rollout may mitigate risks but could face scrutiny over centralization during PoX-5. The community awaits further details on PoX-6's timeline and technical specifications, which are expected to be released in the coming months.
