Bihar to Free 44 Elderly Prisoners on Gandhi Jayanti

The Bihar government will release 44 prisoners on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, most of whom are elderly serving long-term sentences. Among them, two are over 90, eight over 80, and 20 are in the 70-80 age group.

The Bihar government has announced the release of 44 prisoners on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, as part of a special remission drive. The prisoners, a large number of whom are elderly and have been serving long-term sentences, will be freed from various jails across the state. Two of the released prisoners are above 90 years of age, eight are above 80, and 20 are in the 70–80 age group.

This release is part of a broader tradition in India where prisoners are granted remission on significant national occasions, particularly Gandhi Jayanti, to promote humanitarian values and reduce prison overcrowding. The Bihar government has not yet released the full list of names or the specific crimes for which these prisoners were convicted, but officials indicate that most have served a significant portion of their sentences and have shown good behavior. The move is expected to be welcomed by human rights groups advocating for the rights of elderly inmates.

The release highlights ongoing debates about prison reform and the treatment of elderly prisoners in India. While some may question the criteria for remission, others see it as a compassionate gesture. The Bihar government is likely to face scrutiny over the selection process, but the release also sets a precedent for other states to consider similar measures. The prisoners are expected to be released after completing necessary legal formalities on October 2.
