Big Tex Urban Farms, a program operated by the State Fair of Texas, announced it has donated more than 2 million servings of hydroponically grown produce to nonprofits in Southern Dallas since its launch in 2016. The milestone comes as the initiative approaches its 10th anniversary in 2026, highlighting a sustained effort to address food insecurity through year-round greenhouse technology.

The program uses hydroponic systems to grow fresh produce without soil, enabling consistent yields throughout the year. These donations support local charities that distribute food to underserved communities in Southern Dallas. Additionally, Big Tex Urban Farms partners with CityLab High School to provide students with hands-on agricultural education, introducing them to sustainable farming practices and potential career paths in the sector.

The 2 million serving milestone underscores the role of urban agriculture in supplementing traditional food supply chains. As the program enters its second decade, it may serve as a model for other fairs and municipalities seeking to combine community service with educational outreach. Continued support from the State Fair of Texas and local partners will be key to sustaining and expanding its impact.
