Two First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged against senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Tuesday, a day after his residence in Kolkata came under attack. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to police sources. The FIRs were registered at separate police stations in the city, though the exact sections invoked were not immediately clear.

The attack on Bhattacharya's house occurred on Monday, prompting condemnation from CPI(M) and other opposition parties, who blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the violence. Bhattacharya, a former mayor of Kolkata, has been a vocal critic of the TMC government. In a related development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) warned Bhattacharya of legal action over his recent comments on 'Hindutva', stating that such remarks would not be tolerated. The BJP has demanded Bhattacharya's arrest, while the CPI(M) has accused the TMC of orchestrating the attack to intimidate opposition leaders.

The incidents underscore the escalating political tensions in West Bengal, which has witnessed frequent clashes between ruling and opposition party workers in recent years. The arrests and FIRs are likely to further polarize the political landscape ahead of upcoming elections. Both the TMC and BJP have traded blame for the violence, with each accusing the other of cultivating political vendetta. The police are investigating the attack and the circumstances surrounding the FIRs, while political leaders continue to trade barbs, raising concerns about the state's law and order situation.
