APSPDCL Shatters Records: 1 Lakh Rooftop Solar Connections for SC/ST Homes in Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has become the first electricity distribution company in the state to surpass one lakh rooftop solar connections, all allocated to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe households. The 210-MW capacity addition under the Utility-Led Aggregation model places Andhra Pradesh fourth nationally in solar installations, with APSPDCL targeting 2.07 lakh homes across nine districts.

In a significant boost to renewable energy and social inclusion, the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has become the first discom in Andhra Pradesh to cross one lakh rooftop solar connections, all of which are for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) households. The milestone, achieved under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) model, adds 210 MW of solar capacity and positions Andhra Pradesh fourth among Indian states in rooftop solar installations.

The ULA model allows discoms to aggregate demand from residential consumers, particularly from marginalized communities, and facilitate installations through empanelled vendors. APSPDCL's achievement is part of a broader target to equip 2.07 lakh homes across nine districts with rooftop solar systems. This initiative not only promotes clean energy but also aims to reduce electricity bills for economically weaker sections, aligning with the central government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme.

The development underscores the potential of utility-driven programs to drive equitable energy transition. If APSPDCL meets its target, it could serve as a replicable model for other states, potentially accelerating India's rooftop solar adoption and contributing to its ambitious renewable energy goals. However, challenges such as financing, awareness, and infrastructure upgrades remain key to sustaining this momentum.
