AFCON 2027: East Africa's Nine-Month Sprint to Beat the Clock

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have less than nine months to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which they will co-host. The three East African nations face significant infrastructure, logistical, and organizational challenges to meet CAF's requirements. The tournament is set to be the first AFCON hosted in the region since 1976.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are facing a race against time to prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with less than nine months remaining until the tournament kicks off. The three East African nations were awarded co-hosting rights by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), but significant work remains to upgrade stadiums, training facilities, and infrastructure to meet continental standards.

The 2027 edition will be the first AFCON held in East Africa since 1976, when Ethiopia hosted. CAF inspectors have previously raised concerns about the readiness of venues, particularly in Kenya and Uganda, where key stadiums require renovation. Tanzania has made progress with the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, but questions remain over accommodation, transport, and security across all three countries. The tournament is expected to feature 24 teams and generate substantial economic benefits, but failure to meet deadlines could jeopardize hosting rights.

With time running short, the three governments have ramped up funding and construction efforts, but experts warn that delays could force CAF to consider alternative arrangements. The success of AFCON 2027 is seen as crucial for boosting football development and regional integration in East Africa. CAF is expected to conduct further inspections in the coming months, and any major shortcomings could lead to contingency plans, including possible relocation of matches.
