Abu Dhabi Unveils $272M Musaffah Road Overhaul to End Traffic Gridlock
Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport announced a major upgrade of the Musaffah road network, including a 13-kilometer expressway, two new bridges, and intersection improvements. The project aims to ease congestion, enhance safety, and reduce travel times between Musaffah, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and Zayed City. It is part of broader efforts to improve connectivity and support future growth, including a planned marine transport link.
Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a comprehensive upgrade of the Musaffah road network, featuring a new expressway, two bridges, and improvements to multiple intersections. The project, spanning approximately 13 kilometers along the E30 road and Street 8, aims to ease congestion, improve road safety, and reduce travel times between the industrial area, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and Zayed City.
The centerpiece is an expressway along Street 8 with three lanes in each direction, plus additional lanes for local access, expected to accommodate around 4,000 vehicles per hour. The plan also includes upgrades to four intersections on the E30 road, modifications to nine major intersections, and two new bridges linking Musaffah with Mohammed Bin Zayed City, along with a pedestrian bridge. Engineer Issa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director General of Infrastructure Development at DMT, emphasized that the project addresses the diverse needs of residents, commuters, and businesses, separating through traffic from local access to support economic activity and safer journeys.
The Musaffah road development is part of wider efforts to enhance connectivity across Abu Dhabi and complements plans for a future marine transport link with two undersea tunnels connecting Abu Dhabi Island with Musaffah. The project is designed with future growth in mind, ensuring the road network supports Abu Dhabi's development journey. Construction timelines and costs have not yet been disclosed, but the initiative is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and support the area's continued growth.
