Swiss Glaciers Meltdown: 'Catastrophic' 5% Ice Loss After Heatwaves

Switzerland's glaciers lost 5% of their ice volume in 2023 due to prolonged heatwaves, a loss scientists describe as 'catastrophic.' The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS) reports that this year's melt is the second-worst on record, following a 6% loss in 2022. The accelerating decline threatens water supplies, tourism, and alpine ecosystems, underscoring the urgent need for climate action.

Switzerland's glaciers have lost an 'enormous' 5% of their ice volume this year, scientists have warned, following a series of intense heatwaves that swept across Europe. The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS) described the loss as 'catastrophic,' marking the second consecutive year of extreme melt after a record 6% decline in 2022.

The accelerated melting is attributed to a combination of low winter snowfall and prolonged summer heat, with temperatures soaring above 30°C (86°F) in the Alps. According to GLAMOS, some glaciers have retreated by more than 10 meters in just a few weeks. 'We have never seen such a rapid loss in the 60 years we have been monitoring,' said Matthias Huss, head of GLAMOS. 'The glaciers are disappearing before our eyes.'

The implications are far-reaching: reduced glacier melt threatens water supplies for agriculture, hydropower, and drinking water, while also impacting tourism and increasing the risk of landslides and rockfalls. The Swiss government has pledged to cut emissions, but experts warn that even with immediate action, many glaciers are doomed. The alarming data adds pressure on global leaders to accelerate climate mitigation efforts ahead of the upcoming COP28 summit.
