Thousands of primary school teachers from across Meghalaya took to the streets of Shillong on Wednesday, warning of further agitation if the State Government fails to address their long-pending demands.
Under the banner of the All-Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association (AMPSTA), the teachers took out a rally from Pynthorumkhrah Golf Link, passing through Polo, the NPP office, the Chief Secretary’s bungalow and Sawfurlong before returning to the starting point.
AMPSTA General Secretary F.C. Shullai said the government had responded to some of the association’s demands, including the retention of sanctioned posts in government and deficit schools. However, he said the teachers would continue their agitation until all eight demands were addressed.
Among their demands are the regularisation of teachers appointed before 2007, full implementation of the Government PRAN, filling of vacant and additional sanctioned posts, and exemption of teachers from census and Booth Level Officer (BLO) duties.
Shullai said the association’s Executive Committee would meet in Tura to decide on its next course of action.
He warned that if the government fails to take concrete steps to address the demands, the teachers may intensify their agitation, including closure of schools and staging a demonstration outside the Main Secretariat.
